One health problem that most college students face is sleep deprivation.
How many hours of sleep do you get a night? Most college students wouldn’t be able to answer this unless they write down everything that they do a day. For the most part of the day if you are not working you are in school, doing homework and or studying for an exam. Some might find it crazy when they count up there hours on how much they sleep a day. For my INQ class we recently had to keep track of what we do a day and record it down.

When I looked at all the hours added up I seen I wasn’t getting much sleep between school and work there was no time to sleep. No sleep can lead to a lower GPA, which it might sound crazy but it is true. Out of 1,125 students 60% of them had poor sleeping habits. Some people might think over the counter drugs will help with this but that is no the case. It effects you more than you know it.

You will when you believe

For the past few weeks I can say I have learned so much while being at southern, I am learning skills I will need to become successful in my future to come. Last week’s class notes talked about setting and achieving goals in one’s life, and not taking skills. I found these very useful because everyone needs help with those to areas when they are just getting into college. The ability to set and achieve goals in college is so important without it; it’s difficult; this is something that brought interest to me because this is true. While in college you have to set goals and achieve them because without setting goals you will most likely fall behind. I think of this as part of time management, if you give yourself two goals to be completed a week will help. The readings also talked about enjoying student life, sometime it may seem impossible to do so, which is what I believed but anything is possible.

“Confidence translated into an ability to conceive and develop experiments.”

Everyone needs a balance and to worry about getting focused on getting good with a regular infusion. I do find it hard sometimes to make time to enjoy my life in college when I have to study and work most of my time. Down the line I’m sure it will come better with time management.

This week’s readings talked about “Grit”. Grit means to stick with things over the very long term until you master them. As being a college student we will face a lot of struggles and challenges but one thing we can’t do is put it off to the side and wait till later to do something. Angela Duckworth had developed the “Grit scale” to measure ones intelligence.

“Setbacks don't discourage me.” – Grit test

I believe everyone should have at least one setback so that they will come back stronger. Have you ever watched a sport on TV and there was a player that had one bad game. Everyone is expecting that player to have another bad game to follow but that player comes back even stronger, because of their set back. I think ones setback will be the best to bring them back to reality that just because they are doing good does not mean you can just slack off, but you have to keep working and getting better at it. I was once told, “One does not know the world until they have been blind” Which I find this to be so meaning full. No one knows everything and no one can act as they do, because there is always something new to learn.

A real surprise

Everyone faces challenges in there life time, ones that might make or break you. Sometimes they can be overwhelming depending on how someone can take the situation. All together I can say challenges are not easy as some people may make them seem. Almost everyone has heard, “You have to grow up sometime” from your parents. For my 18th birthday I had a job interview as soon as I got out of school, I was nervous but more excited then anything. There was so many questions running threw my head would I get hired, am I wearing the right outfit. My teacher came up to me and said, “just because it is your birthday you will get a surprise today” not knowing what they were talking about.

So I walk up to the interview and get welcomed by a man named Pete who looked like a teddy bear to me. The interview was over before I knew it, this leading me to think I wasn’t getting the job. When later that night when I was at the movies with my friends I get a call saying I got the JOB! The best present that someone can possible give someone I got my first job. Well that’s when everything started going down hill. Working, school and cheerleading. Would all three of these last as I thought it would?
The day came where I had to make the choice, and I can say it was not an easy one.

I decided I would have to quite cheerleading.. Shortly two months after working my boss pulled me to the side and sat me down the would I will never forget: “So Brittney I have been talking with the other supervisors and we have came to a conclusion…” I was near tears, thinking I was about to get fired “…we have decided to promote you to a shift supervisor, your performance over these past two months have improved and you are one of the star workers we have.” Me out of all people being the first to be promoted, its unbelievable.

After a few months of the promotion it hit me that I was overwhelmed and couldn’t handle all the stress and work any longer. For the most part my choice had been decided for me when I started my training for my CNA certification. Working and taking care of the elderly then having to come to work right after caused so much pain mentally and physically. So I sat my boss down and told him, that I will no longer be able to be able to be a key holder, due to the fact that I am overwhelmed with everything. He told me he did understand but also said, “ You were the best shift supervisor we had and will ever have.”

After this situation I have learned that no matter what I know my bodies limits and what I can and cannot put up with. Also I have learned not to over work my self to a point where I can no longer handle the situation at hand.

Delayed Gratification is the ability to wait or to be patience. Not everyone has this some people want things done when they want it done. There have been studies to test the theory; if you can wait for a treat you will be successful in life. If you couldn’t wait for the treat then you would not do as well as the others that could wait. Other words that I have learned this week were objectification and hostility. Objectification means to be viewed as an object and not a person. Hostility means to express be self’s negatively.

"Come Join Are Club"

This is all I heard coming from every direction, every club trying to get people to sign up  for there club. Two club that drew my intrest was the West Indies club and ProCon.

The West Indies club drew my attention because I want to learn about another culture threw not just telling me what the culture is about but threw dance and other activities. One of my goal that I set for myself coming into college was to join a club where I could do culture dance. They meet every Wednesday at 1. Since I found one club that drew my instrest I had to find another.

ProCon is a club I had to join, everyone has heard about "Peanut butter and Jelly Thursdays" they are the ones to put it all together. The meet every Monday at 1 in the student center. If you love to eat this is the club for you to join, there is nothing like food mainly when is free and you are on a college students budget. But this club is not just about

Would the test be affected if someone was just hungry?

This is one of the questions I have come up with for my inquiry question this week. What if the test subject didn’t eat around the time the test was going to be given and was growing hungry? When they see the food/sweet there taste buds go crazy so now they are starving and are more tempted to eat. If they wait the reward will be greater than what is on the table, the debate is on. Eat now and not wait or wait and get more, but it’s a 15 minute wait can I do this? Not everyone is the same at least some people I know will grab the food right then and there just to satisfy the hunger for the time being.

Everyone has heard this song from their childhood for the most part, “Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar.” This song reminds me of the marshmallow test. If you put someone’s favorite treat or food in front of them and they will be tempted to eat it. It’s there one weakness, and it is hard to fight the temptation. But if you ask me this test doesn’t test the ability of one’s gratification. This test to me studies how patient someone can be, I don’t think this one test will be able to determine how successful someone will be in the future. Say if one of the test subjects had passed the test but took a complete 360 and didn’t do well in their future what does that say about the test? Just testing people with food won’t show you anything about their gratification, but it will show you who is hungry and who can wait to eat and get more food.

Stop the wait! I want it now!!

Everyone gets the gitters when it comes to waiting for a long time. How long is really long? Minutes can feel like hours days like weeks and so on and so forth. Have you ever ordered something online and shipping says maybe a week? Just because you know it says a week you will make it feel as if it’s about a month. It’s all in you mindset and how bad you want something. I know at least for me I am not a very patient person either I get it soon or I don’t want it. It’s a bad habit but I have broken it some times before.

One day I was at the DMV (department of motor vehicles) to get my I.D. I was waiting for what seemed to feel like days but all together I was really only waiting about three hours at the most. Its not the first time this has happened to me, it’s very often I will get impatience and lose interest. I have mastered this now I will start thinking about something out that will kill time while I am waiting. For the most part it does work but it can only take up so much time.

I feel that some people have more patients then others it really just depends on the person and the situation. If that person was brought up to the point where they don’t need to wait for anything, then growing up they will have problems with being patient. For the people that were brought up to wait and have patients when they grow up they wont have an issue waiting. I believe technology might have some play in this because say for instance you are doing a homework assignment instead of looking for information in the book you use Google to get answers. Even when typing a paper for an assignment you have spell check for the most part Technology does most of the work for people now days.
